Music

Vernon School Music Notes

Welcome to music!  Here at Vernon Elementary School all classes learn the 9 national, state and local music standards: 1-sing, 2-play instruments, 3-improvise, 4-compose, 5-read and notate music, 6-listen to and analyze music, 7-evaluate performances, 8-understand relationships between music and other disciplines, 9-understand how music relates to history and culture.  Each class learns these standards through singing, playing instruments, reading music, composing, improvising, dancing, and various other lessons.

In K-2 students learn the standards through our study of traditional folk songs and dances. Second graders learn about sound.  Third graders learn recorder, instrument families, and Peter and the Wolf.  Fourth Graders learn about instrument families, the roots of jazz, songs from around the world, immigration songs, the real Von Trapp family and the Sound of Music.  Fifth Graders study 12 bar blues, composition, and basic guitar. Sixth Graders study Broadway, guitar basics, and piano basics.

Here at Vernon we are very lucky to have a band/lesson program that is open to all students in 4-6 grade.  We have three bands: Advanced Band, Beginning Band, and Jazz Band.  Each ensemble meets before school from 7:15am-8:00am.  Students have a 30 minute lesson once a week with a small group of students playing the same instrument.  Thank you for your strong support of the arts!
